Iscrizione

ColonneThe importance of this archaeological site is undoubtedly due to the Tempio Romanoremains of a Roman place of worship
( the only example of its kind in Sardinia), but going over its background we will find the vestiges of a Nuragic village and cremation burials, as well as three shaft graves belonging to the Iron Age (late Nuragic period), which are particularly interesting examples of a burial type not frequently found in Sardinia.

The remains of the Carthaginian place of worship (500 B.C.), erected in honour of the Punic God Sid Addir Babay, are visible beneath the entrance steps to the Roman temple.

The Roman temple, which dates back to the Ist Century B.C., was renewed a number of times until the large renovation work reported in the inscription situated in the highest part of the building. This inscription corroborates its chronological dating to the III century A.D. and the worship of the god “Sardus Pater Babai”.

Tempio RomanoYou can take a twenty-minute walk from the valley to reach the Roman quarry where huge rocks were extracted to build the temple with.

Cave RomaneIn addition, an hour-long walk along the old Roman road takes you from Antas to the Cave of Su Mannau, where the water worship was practised.
The parking area, which includes bar, ticket office and souvenir shop, is situated in a luxuriant Holm-oak wood.
